Our client, a German chemicals manufacturer, was reviewing the chemicals industry in Russia for strategic acquisition opportunities. A number of potential options were available. Before expressing interest, our client wished to understand in greater detail the interests and influences, both commercial and political, at work in the Russian chemicals sector.
Our analysis of the sector identified that the target most favoured by our client was viewed by a very powerful and politically well-placed Russian industrial group as being within its sphere of influence and central to its development plans. Our work revealed that since this group was also the most important client of the enterprise being targeted, it was doubtful that our client would be able to exert real control post-acquisition. Armed with this information, our client turned its attention to a target which was free from such an overbearing influence.
